GUESTS WITH MOBILITY DIFFICULTIES
Sea Shells by the Beach cottage owners welcome guests with disabilities and several wheel chair guests (with carers) have happily stayed here. However, we would recommend only staying if a wheelchair user guest CAN walk a few steps as the shower has a ledge and all the doorways are standard widths.
The accommodation is all ground level and consists of flat decking from the guest car parking driveway and then from the cottage entrance, wooden and vinyl flooring throughout.
There are steps to the sea front garden which can be seen in the website photographs. There are railings for support and access can be from a bedroom or the kitchen , onto decking which runs flat down to this garden, except for 2 steps. In the cottage there is a metal ramp if needed , to aid access over these steps.
There is a beautiful flat walk from the cottage to Ventnor harbour , along the seafront. There are private steps to this from Sea Shells garden but an alternative would be to walk on the road around to the sea front (a slight hill down/up) The promenade is a perfect surface for mobility scooters.
Guests have frequently brought their mobility scooters and parked them in their secure , locked passageway, along with wheelchairs and walking aids.
There is a main bathroom and a shower room. The shower tray is about 3 inches off the ground with a shower stool and a hand rail grip. It is a standard size shower cubical with bi-fold doors. If you are a wheelchair user and cannot walk into the shower room, this accommodation may not be suitable access wise as it would not be possible to get a wheelchair into the shower room.

BONCHURCH
Sea Shells by the Beach stands proud over Horseshoe Bay, superbly situated overlooking the sea front at Bonchurch, with a pebble beach at low tide in front of the cottage. There are wonderful open sea views from the property which stands adjacent to the pedestrian only promenade. Further along the promenade to the east, there is Monks Bay- a sandy and shingle beach open to dogs all year, popular with rock poolers and swimmers at low tide. Along the promenade to the west is the delightful town of Ventnor, reached via Wheeler’s Bay with the lovely Seapots cafe open on sunny days from March to October.
The centre of the seaside hamlet of Bonchurch is within a 10 minute walk from Sea Shells by the Beach and here there is a large pond full of ducks, wildlife birds and fish, an 11th century church ,beautiful stone houses and sub tropical plants and the most wonderful walks, some uphill . A ‘Gastro Pub’ in upper Bonchurch is within a 20 minute walk, serving Italian cuisine.
Bonchurch has a lovely peaceful air and perhaps for this reason was popular with writers and poets in Victorian times, the most famous of whom was CHARLES DICKENS,who described Bonchurch eloquently and passionately. In a letter to his wife on Saturday 16 th June 1849, he wrote: “I have taken the most delightful and beautiful house belonging to White at Bonchurch, cool, airy, private bathing everything delicious – I think it is the prettiest place I ever saw in my life, at home or abroad.”
Do please read this thrilling and delightful personal account of him.
Nearest Towns
A pleasant gentle 20 minute walk along the level ground of the promenade leads you through Wheelers Bay to the small seaside resort of Ventnor with its harbour, larger sandy beach, cafés, restaurants and various small shops. The coastal path eastwards from Bonchurch provides a delightful walk through the rural hamlet of Luccombe to the larger seaside resort of Shanklin –about an hour’s walk. Shanklin has a long wide sandy beach, perfect for bucket and spade days to the wooded ravine which is Shanklin Chine and the Old Village with its independent shops, restaurants and pubs, Shanklin has all the charm of a proper seaside town and set against the dramatic sandstone cliffs, the beach is one of the most stunning walks to take on the Island. You could rent a beach hut and watch the world go by or try your hand at the water sports on offer or have a paddle. Visit Shanklin Theatre at night for a show and relish the twinkly lights and thatched cottages in Old Shanklin.
